I drive a Prius, and have for a year and a half. I average over 55 mpg, and sell them also at Rodland Toyota in Everett. I would give a discount to anyone who purchases one through me. Thanks so much. Brett

Going into town....
We now live about 18 miles from the main town, so I bought a new Aveo. We make a list so that we can take care of shopping, appointments etc at the same time. Also I go to the park n ride in the morning, and ride a VanPool to work. Our gas savings are better than ever now.

Recycling Compact Discs
This is for the unsolicited discs you get in the mail or ruined when you burned a copy or are obsolete. They are so shiny that I use them tied together back to back and hanging in my fruit trees and in my garden to keep the birds from eating my produce. You can place them in a circle around your seedlings in the garden to reflect sunlight and warmth. If you have a glue gun and lots of discs you can create a "wall" of discs to re-direct sunlight into shady spot. It's kind of fun to try to make a pattern on the non-reflective side. I have also made a mobile that hangs in my office at home with different colored small round glass ornaments and discs. Anything shiny can be employed in art projects and it helps to keep them out of the land fill.

Most dry cleaning doesn't have to be
Most of my dry-clean-only clothing is perfectly fine if hand-washed in cold water. I wouldn't try it with wool (and maybe not rayon) but most everything else comes out perfect. And NEVER dry-clean things that are not dry-clean-only just for convenience.

When you get extra napkins with your takeout or at a restaurant, save them.
I have a drawer full of napkins and they are all extras that I was given but didn't use. I tuck them in my purse or a pocket and transfer them to the drawer. We haven't purchased napkins or paper towels ever. They would otherwise have gone to waste.

Take your own plates/utensils to work
I have a plate, utensils, and coffee cup at work. I rinse them after lunch. I take one napkin, not a huge stack. When I dry my hands in the bathroom, I air-dry. I get annoyed when someone pulls 3 - 4 paper towels out to dry their hands.

No Plastic Bags
I pack my sandwiches in Rubbermaid sandwich container that I bought in 1978. I estimate I've saved over 6000 plastic bags by using this one container alone. There's not much that I can't brown bag in a reusable container instead of a plastic bag. I've save hundreds of dollars over the years, saved hundreds of gallons of oil and kept all those plastic bags out of our landfills.

I was looking to save ga$ and be greener in my transportation. I considered a bicycle but it was a little too physically demanding for this old body and where I need to travel. I then purchased a 125cc Scooter. I love the 90MPG and even though it's much greener than my car, it's also just flat out FUN !!!!

dryer lint (from www.greenhuman.org)
Okay, I know I'm being a little over the top here but did you know that a clump of dryer lint (yeah that stuff you scrape off the screen after you dry your clothes) makes for a perfect fire starter? Yes, that boy or girl scout, hunter or camper in your family can put it to good use on those campouts. Yes, I know this isn't going to save the world, but the point is that we should take every opportunity to reuse and recycle things, even down to the smallest thing we can think of. It's about more than dryer lint, it's about a mindset of "leaving no trace" and an attitude of "is there someway I can save or re-use this?".

Showering the "less is more" way
Turn the shower setting to its warmest. Use the water that comes out of the shower at first to wet just the hair down while keeping the rest of the body out. Turn the water off, then apply the shampoo, then turn the water back on. Wash the lather out and by the time your done with that the water is probably warm enough to take the rest of a shower and not be cold when you step into the stall. Wet the whole body down, turn the water off, apply soap to the body, turn the water back on and use just enough to wash off, starting at the forehead and work your way down. (The suds and water will not get on places that you have already washed the suds off of.)This not only saves one from wasting water while waiting for it to get warm, it saves overall amounts of water that is needed to take a shower. Another savings: You save warm water for somebody else to use for whatever other need, you also save $$ on the energy needed to heat the warm water that you save.

Call Seattle light at 684-8822 and sign up for the "green up" program. You pay only $12 per month to get all your electrical power from wind generated power. What a deal compared to solar panels on the roof. Seattle only has some 2000 people on this program while Portland has 61,000 participants!

use clean energy
Sign up to get all your electricity from wind generated power sources by calling Seattle City Light at 206-684-882. It only cost $12 per month. We are one of the only 7000 or so households in Seattle signed up to support clean energy development. Portland has 61,000 participants! This doesn't seem right.

Before getting a prescription refilled, check with the pharmacy about reusing your pill bottles. The store I use refills your bottles as long as the info on the labels is current. You can also use these handy little containers as storage for small craft items, seeds, odds and ends in the garage, etc.

Tully's has compostable coffee cups
Drink coffee at Tully's Leave your compostable coffee cups in their compostable bins or put them in your compost bins when you get home! Composting is a great way to recycle! I know it costs them more to offer these cups, but the company is rying to do its part for the environment!

Chinook Book
I have purchased several of the Chinook coupon books--have used coupons to shop at Goods for the Planet (while combining trips to save gas!), to get reusable shopping bags from QFC, to buy Ballard Orangics soaps because they are made in town and don't require a lot of transportation related pollution to get to me and have used the bus passes in the book. I plan to use more of the coupons when I need those environmental products and services.

Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs
Seattle is subsidizing the cost of compact fluorescents at a number of local stores. We have installed them in most of the sockets in our house.

Many of your listeners favor transit, as evidenced by the old "Mayor for a Minute" wishes. Local advertisers should tell us which bus lines serve their facilities (at hours when they are open). Even if the merchandise is too large to fit on the bus, we can do our comparative shopping by bus, or request delivery.

Go Veggie!
As Moby stats in his journal: The one thing that still stuns me, though, is that almost no one in the 'stop global warming' camp talks about the environmental ramifications of animal production. To quote a UN article: Rearing cattle produces more greenhouse gases than driving cars, UN report warns.

Living Green Everyday
We started taking our own reusable containers to restaurants to use as a doggy bag. I will never take another Styrofoam container home from a restaurant again. May 06 we bought a VW Jetta TDI and we are running B90 Biodiesel. We are looking for someone to rent goats from to clean up the blackberries in our yard. We found 2 different local people who do this, but they will only do acreage. We are on 1/3 acre and the blackberries are as tall as our house. It’s not a small job. Do you know anyone who will rent us goats? It’s the greenest way to reclaim your yard. The goats also aerate and fertilize the soil.

PHEV transportation, PV roofing
The real energy solution is plug-in hybrid electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Volt or those made by Tesla Motors together with Photo Voltaic or Solar Electric roofing such as http://www.atlantisenergy.org/sunslates2.html where excess power is sold back to the utilities and you recharge your electric car.

Fewer Children
The single most important factor in global warming is overpopulation. Every new child destroys the future for others and their ability to survive. I'm not opposed to children but we need to reduce world population by half for survival. npg.org

Buy in Bulk
Save containers and take to your local Co-op or health food store to refill with bulk products such as dish liquid, cooking oils, shampoos, peanut butter, etc. - this way you are only buying the product, not the packaging, and keeping trash out of the landfill
